This project, dubbed "Connecting with the Universe" during the design phase is a salute to John Muir, the Scottish-American naturalist and founder of the Sierra Club, a prominent American conservation group. He believed that our personal immersion in nature was the closest we could ever come to experiencing true understanding of our world and through it, our universe. 

John or "John of the Mountains" as he was known to many was a naturalist, author, philosopher and glaciologist who wrote an enormous number of published works including letters, essays and books describing adventures in nature. His personal involvement helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park among many other wildernesses that we enjoy today. The John Muir Trail, a 211 mile trail in Sierra Nevada, was named in his honor as well as Muir Woods National Monument, Muir Beach, John Muir College, Mount Muir, Camp Muir, Muir Glacier and the John Muir Way - a 130 mile long route for hikers. Basically, if you've enjoyed being out doors and connecting in nature at any time in your life, this one man and his passion for nature are probably what allowed you the opportunity through his continual influence among the environmental conscience of the American people even long after his death. He is referred to as the "Father of the National Parks" system and "one of the patron saints of twentieth-century American environmental activity." Every time the wilderness calls to you to get outside, every time you walk that path through the forest, field or mountain, every time your heart yearns for the outdoors, remember that this man's vision and determination are likely the reason you have that opportunity.
